November 2011

This month we met at Chopstix in Perry Hall to discuss our latest book,
Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford.
We also welcomed 2 new faces to the group - Marcia and Dorsey.  After some yummy Chinese food and some lively discussion (Penn State scandal anyone?), we jumped in to share our thoughts about the book.  Overall, the concensus was that we enjoyed it.  We discussed many of the characters in depth and expressed our wish that the author had written a sequel about Keiko's life.

We voted (many times) on our next book!  After weighing book lengths (nothing too long for the upcoming holidays) and subject matter (nothing too "down" for the holidays) and considering suggestions listed on sites for ..."If you like this book, try...", we finally made a decision using the fairest method we know--flipping a coin.  A winner was chosen! We will be reading

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

Our next meeting will be December 10th, so get reading!

No one brought a camera so we relied on cell phones for pictures of this month's meeting.  Check them out.

We're Off To A Great Start!

After our initial meeting in September at The Green Turtle in Towson, we all anxiously began to read our first book club selection. The Devil In the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson was a big undertaking--literally--at 447 pages!

We met on Saturday, October 22nd at Barb's BEAUTIFUL home!  She was such a welcoming host.  We celebrated the book with food and drink inspired by the book: chocolate martinis, deep dish Chicago pizza, hamburgers, Old Fashioned Cracker Jack Cake, guacamole dip, and caramel apples. After eating, we got down to business and talked about the book.  Some of us admitted (sheepishly) that we couldn't get into the book or get it read.  Others shared that the book got better after page 300 :-)  Much discussion about how Holmes was able to get away with his actions for so long and the marvel that was the World's Fair!  Kristi brought some extra realism with pictures of the main characters and shots from the fair.  What a spectacular production that was!

We voted for our next book-Epic Romance and the winner is....Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford.
